In 1992 Claire and her husband custom built their “dream” home in West Plano. It was a labor of love and a lot of fun. They worked with an architect to conceptualize a California contemporary design. Her husband handled the mechanicals and the technology while she was in charge of the interior design which was a combination of southwest, modernist and artsy.
Like most of Frank Lloyd Wright’s homes, many of the rooms had beautiful woodgrain custom built-ins which precluded the need for furniture. Some of the furniture was custom designed and built to fit the size, shape, and style of certain rooms, such as the living room sofa.
Some functional elements were artistically designed and custom built that also served as artwork. For example, the etched glass window in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright in the master bathroom and the hammered copper stair handrail were very unique and gorgeous.
The home was truly a design masterpiece. Everyone thought it was fabulous! It was a joy for their family to live in for 12 years.
Only a few photos remain of the home from over 20 years ago. The images may look somewhat outdated now although some of the pieces are modern classics and will always be relevant. Claire’s modern style has evolved as she’s become more experienced.
Most importantly, the design knowledge and skill Claire gained from custom building her own home is priceless. (This project was actually the second time she and her husband custom built a home.) Claire applies this valuable design expertise to her clients’ advantage when they are seeking consultation.
